Tram 34 goes to Bendigo

07 June 2025

Tram 34 was moved in May to the Bendigo Tramway workshops where the restoration works have begun. The tram will then return to the BTM workshop where all the electrical work can be completed. This restoration is possible thanks to the many generous donations (but we still need more to finish it!).

This tram started life c.1916 when it was made by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide, for the Hawthorn Tramway Trust. It then operated until the late 1940s with the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board before relocating to Ballarat. After the closure of the Ballarat Tramway in 1971 the tram was given to the Adelaide Tramway Museum. They recently returned the tram to Ballarat.

The tram is a maximum traction double bogie tram, but it has a different body configuration to similar trams in our current collection (which were built for the Prahran and Malvern Tramway Trust. This in the only “Hawthorn” car in our collection.

The bogies have been removed and restoration is underway
