Experience one of Victoria’s most exciting heritage rail events at the Steamrail Victoria Newport Workshops Open Days. Held over the Labour Day long weekend, this rare public event invites visitors to explore 140 years of Melbourne’s railway history at the historic Newport Workshops.
Join Steamrail Victoria and other heritage rail groups as they put locomotives into steam, operate them within the workshop yard, and open parts of the depot that are normally closed to the public. Visitors can see a variety of steam, diesel and electric locomotives, walk through complete trains and inspect rolling stock up close.
The event also features displays from associated groups and offers a unique opportunity to learn about railway technology, engineering and preservation firsthand. Tickets include free entry to the adjacent Newport Railway Museum, and a heritage shuttle bus runs between the workshop site, the museum and Newport Station for the duration of the event.
